So, I installed a new garage door opener and obviously noticed the notching that the previous installer did.

Can I just put some new 2x6 collar ties above these and that would be enough?

There are only five collar ties for the whole garage so I was kind of thinking of adding more anyway.

That looks more like a rafter tie ( lower third of the rafter) You should be able to just add another above that and still be in the lower 1/3rd.

Collar ties are in the upper 1/3rd

They run from top plate to top plate.

So just directly above is the best spot?

Anywhere in the lower third will do.

Ceiling joists that sit on the wall are also rafter ties. :wink2:
