I am currently pulling my guest house off grid. I want to run hot water from a solar thermosiphon system but not yet. In the interim, I want to run cold water only through our home.

I pulled the electric hot water heater off the system left the feed line to it simply "cut" hanging out in space. When I turn on the water feed to the house, cold water spills out of this line. Is this normal? Should I simply cap this line or is there a bigger problem? My feeling is that there is a a bad seal in a faucet or toilet in the house that is allowing cold water to run to the hot side, but maybe it's something simpler.

Any comments?

A water heater always has a cold feed and a hot out line. Obviously, water will come out of the cold line if the water is turned on. Any faucet that has the hot valve on, will allow cold water into the hot lines when the cold side is turned on. Sometimes there is a recirculation loop to allow hot water to flow faster. If there is one, that should be turned off.

Why not reconnect the tank, and just shut off the breaker if you don't want hot water? Or better yet, leave the tank in operation untill you do your solar siphon whatchamicallit?
