I tore down an existing old ceiling because it was BAD. span is 9'6" with joists on 16" centers. Will 2X4's hold 5/8 drywall,,,or do I require 6" lumber there?

What's over this area? Even 2x6 is small with a floor or storage above this space. If nothing will ever be put up there, a 2x6 would be my choice.
