Hello everyone. I am currently working on demo of an old walk in closet and trying to plan my next steps for framing/drywall. Previously, the walls were covered with paneling and held up with furring strips. The ceiling was also pretty bad so I ripped that down to the beams. The furring strips are attached directly to the brick, some are loose some are solid. There is so significant bottom or top plate. I guess my main question is:

- is this an acceptable way to frame over the brick if I can add new furring strips and make sure they are level?

I am trying to lose as little room as possible and dont really want to add a 2x4 frame, especially bc of the framed out chimney in the middle.

I added a few pictures, but have many more if needed.

thanks in advance for any tips/advice!

I'd consider putting paneling back up. Drywall/plaster needs repainting from time to time and it can be a job emptying a closet to paint and then wait on it to dry. Non of the closets in my house have drywall on the walls.

It looks like there was water coming from the roof or the roof to brick chimney section (which is common as most roofers to not properly deal with the upslope side of the chimney) and I would want to fix this before adding new anything.
