Clip to cover laptop camera

Any suggestions on how I can make a clip-like gizmo to cover the camera on my laptop? I've looked at all of the commercial solutions and I don't like any of them. I've been using blue painter's tape because it comes off easily and doesn't leave a residue. It works pretty well and I'll stay with that if I can't find anything better.

I tried one of those black clips for holding pages together, but the grab is way too strong.

I'd like something that will go on and off easily and just barely hold on. I'm going to go to the hardware store and look for some soft metal that I can line with paper.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Maybe take a piece of plastic like kydex and heat it. It should bend to fit.

When I still worked I used a company laptop. I cut a small piece of black electrical tape and put it over the camera. But I never needed to remove it.

Is that something you built?

Not yet, but it is on my list.
I don't know kids, how can we improve on painter's tape? Black tape if you like it to "match". If you're a bit computer savvy you can simply turn it on and off.

Some people are scared that 'they' can turn it on and off.
+1 on the electrical tape, $0.59/roll. Cut 3/4" long, fold over a flap on top. If you remove it a lot and it loses sticky, cut another one. Doesn't interfere with laptop closing.

The ones you buy work perfectly fine too if you like gadgetry.

A trojan virus can activate your webcam. With computers I never use the cam on, I cut the tape in a circle to just fill in the lens, can't even tell.
I tape over the camera and microphone on my laptop and tablet. I just use gorilla tape as I will never need to remove it.
If there is some metal in that spot a light magnet may work.

A small piece of metal/plastic/wood with a screw going through one end that allows the piece to be covered and uncovered over the lens by twisting it. If your uncomfortable with drilling a hole in your computer make it so it clamps to it.
don't over think it, just use a sticker or I used surgical tape, or even cut a sticking plaster/bandaid to size. any residue can be removed with some goo gone

been using this method for 10 years no issues whatsoever

When the original PicturePhone tried to break into the face to face market back in the early 70's one of the obstacles it ran into was people being uncomfortable with a camera looking right at them even if it was supposedly off.

One of the product trials was the WH and most of the president's staff. Within a week the order came down to remove all of them. Ironically the list of names included many of the Watergate crew. Apparently they didn't mind watching other people but really objected to the thought of being watched themselves.

So your concerns about that camera are well founded.
