i faux finished some wooden steps to look like granite and now i want to protect them enogh to walk on them with moderate foot traffic. What can i use?

Depends on what you used for the faux finish. Ask a real paint store for compatible clear coat material and I should think you will want something with some polyurethane in it. If you used acrylic products for the faux finish you should let them cure 30 days or so before top coating.
