I have been primarily using the yellow Ideal wire nuts. A friend of mine suggested that I try using 3M's Performance Plus line. I was going to order a box of the R/Y+, but I also see the T/R+. They appear to be similar but are more compact. Has anyone used either of these? Is it worth switching from the Ideal wire nuts?

The R/Y+ has a flexible skirt, the T/R+ doesn't have it. That's the difference.
The flexible skirt makes it a little more forgiving as far as your strip length.

As far as comparing to ideal, they are both good brands.

A lot of wire nut preferences have to do with what you are used to, how they feel to your hands, ease of installation, whether you like using twisting tool or not, etc.

Thanks for your post. Do you use either of them? Do you think it's better with the skirt or without?

Could you also help me with a wire nut fill question? I need to connect 4 #12 and 2 #16 wires. The #16's are pigtails that are built into the two switches that I'm using. I see that the R/Y+ allows for a max of 5 #12 or 2 #8. Is that large enough? I'm not sure what the combined gauge is of 2 #16 wires.

Thank you again for your help.

I'm not a sparky.

I stock 3 sizes, red, yellow and the green with the hole in the end for ground wires with a pigtail. These provide everything I need for 15-20 amp and most 30 amp residential service applications. The reds do 2-5 #12 wires and the yellows are will do 1 #12 or #14 with a fixture wire and various other combinations.

On the service van I have Ideal tans, reds, oranges, small blues and big blues. I find the tan wire nuts to be my favorite and also the most used. I also find them secure and tight when I come across them already installed. I'm not a real big fan of any of the 3M's. The old "scotchloc" type sucked to remove. GB is got to be the worst as I've seen many of them cracked or have fallen off.
