I have roots about 10 feet down a 2" sewer pipe. I have a regular spiral bit hand held auger but the bit is not well suited for cutting roots and it's not changeable. I don't want to spend over $100 to buy a large auger, and renting every year seems like a waste.

I've been searching for a root cutting bit adapter or inexpensive auger that allows interchangeable bits but haven't found anything. Any ideas on what I can purchase to get the job done without breaking the bank?

keep dreaming that your going to cut roots with a hand drain cleaner, and for under $100.00..fix the problem not the symptom for long term savings...or try a foaming root killer in the pipe..

if you call a plumber he will cut the roots with the proper cutter on an electric snake.....you will not even come close by hand...after its running you could use root destroyer for maintance....

I'm all for DIY but you have to be realistic. The way I see it you have a couple options. First option, call a plumber to do it right and probably end up paying at least a few hundred bucks. Second option, keep renting a real snake with the right attachment every year but like you said that is a waste. Third, dig up the yard and replace the pipes that are a problem. Fourth, buy your own drain machine(electric) that can handle the roots. But you are looking at way more then your 100 dollar budget for a good machine, even a used one.

If this was me I would spend the money and buy a good machine for myself to use when needed. The way I see it a plumber is going to be a few hundred or more for one time and double that if he has to come back in a year or two. Renting is probably 50 bucks each time if you are renting the right snake(not a little electric drill one). So if you have to do it once or twice a year that adds up quick. So you would be better off just buying your own to have as needed. But like I said it isn't going to be in your hundred dollar budget. But none of your options are going to be in that budget. It's time to bite the bullet and spend some money to do it right.
