Good Evening,

I am hoping to modify the the gate that is along the exterior of my carport from to outward swinging gates to one gate that can slide alongside my neighbor's fence and then swing across my carport. I already have my own posts in place where the two gates were hinged. However, I am unsure as to what types of brackets I will need. I have browsed Lowes and Home Depot for materials, but without knowing what this type of hinge is called, I am looking for a needle in a haystack.

Here is what I (think I) know I need...

  • 1 x gate to fit the width of the carport (the posts may need to be adjusted slightly)

  • 2 x wheels (so that gate can slide through the brackets supporting it)

  • 1-2 x additional posts

What I don't know is...

  • the type of bracket is needed that will allow the gate to slide through

  • the type of hinge that will allow the gate to slide past and then allow it to rotate enough to close

I have a project loan through Home Depot, so any items that can be purchased through them would be preferred.

Thanks!

Ugh, I was hoping there would be some mechanism that would allow the gate to switch over from a sliding portion to a hinge.

Is there a hinge that allows for each assembly/disassembly? That way, I could just have the gate on wheels, and then assemble/disassemble it, as needed. I could mount brackets that can lift up/down to act as a guide and make it look professional instead of having a gate just sitting behind my shed.

We want a gate on the back so we can lock up the area when we are away for prolonged periods of time.

Why can't you lock up the configuration you have now? Just wrap the two gates together with 2 feet of chain and a lock.

It is a hassle to move the gates every time leave/return to our house. I want to be able to move the gate behind the shed. Then, when we aren't home for a prolonged period of time, I can pull out the gate and lock it up. My backyard isn't wide enough for a simple sliding gate. Nor can I leave the gate open all the time; it would block my neighbor's parking pad.
