we built a new house as our own GC and the fiber cement lap siding (certainteed = CT) is cracking in several places. Most common is cracks extending up from or down from windows or door corners, but it also cracks on regular long pieces too, usually at the ends the crack will be diagonal.
It appears that the house is moving some and the siding can't take the movement so it cracks. It's really bad but I don't see this as being a problem for anyone else. I have heard that the CT siding is more brittle and I've heard about changes in their recipe (less fly ash). This siding was installed in July 2008 and started cracking within a few days, pieces were replaced and the cracking happened again, seems like we get a new crack somewhere every week.
My guess is we are getting a little movement due to wind and this stuff has zero toleration and is cracking, the cut pieces around windows cracks first because it is weaker there.
Do I have to replace all of the siding? Is the siding defective, who is responsible?
The installer doesn't understand it either?
Our framer wasn't the best in the world but I don't know what he could have done wrong to cause this.
Has anyone else seen this with certainteed weatherboard siding?
I wished I had installed Hardie or Smart Lap siding instead.
