Hello,

Can you install ceramic tile over a linoleum floor that is glued down to concrete?? Is so is there any special ways of doing it?

Thanks

the reason for the bump is I have removed the vinyl which was glued to the slab tho it came up easily. I am left with residue and some paint overspray are these bond breakers, do i need to get down to the concrete or can I skim the foor with a product and then come back and tile. this is in a bath. thanks

Sorry about this answer but...yes and no.

Paint on a concrete floor in the form of overspray from painting walls is generally do-able if it isn't too thick and the grainy surface of the concrete is still present.

In the case of adhesive residue that also depends. If the adhesive was black and has now been scraped away so as to leave nothing more than a serious stain then there are modified thinset mortars that can be used over this adhesive residue. Usually the thinset bag will say so. The black adhesives are referred to as "cutback" adhesive and that is generally the term used.

If the adhesive is any other color it could be a water-based adhesive. Some water-based adhesives won't present a problem after they have cured (they can't be reimulsified) but some very well could present a problem. So...the thing to do in that case is to throw a small amount of water on the floor (adhesive) and let it stand for thirty minutes or so. If it turns a lighter color and is slimy to the touch, it must be removed. If it isn't removed it will do the same thing when it is under the thinset and the thinset won't bond to it or the floor.:)

You cannot install backerboard over concrete. That is yet another
Bag-O-Worms you won't want to deal with.:)

If you were to use a quality "modified thinset" you'll be fine.
