Last night, there was a big whoosh sound in my house followed by a good amount of smoke. Even an orange glow was observed through the vent right behind my Central AC air handler. It has new fans inside and out, but is a very old unit. I observed smoke coming out from a small pipe near the drain. I suspect that somehow the coil broke and the freon caught fire. I can't think of anything else. Fortunately, nothing else caught fire. Now the house is really hot since bad roofers stole my insulation a few years ago. Any ideas?http://www.diychatroom.com/images/smilies/sad.gif

Mke sure all power is off.

Doubt you had the coil open and the refrigerant catch fire.
You would have left the house real quick from the odor. It would have burnt your lungs.

With the limite info you gave.

Best I can tell you. Is call a contractor.
