This has happened for three days now. Our central A/C just stops working around 1:30 pm. The fan won't blow and we can't force it on. Then, around 8:40 pm, it kicks back on again, working all night long until around 1:30 the next day.

A/C guy came out this morning and said that our programmable thermostat (which was only 4 months old) was probaly faulty. He replaced it with another one and programmed it himself.

Well, come 1:30ish today, the A/C turned itself off again. Then it turned back on at 8:35 pm.

I called the A/C guy and he is coming out to look at it again tomorrow. But, he said he really doesn't know what could be the problem.

Why in the world would our unit turn off & on like that at nearly THE SAME TIME every day?

It's both inside & outside. I asked the guy to show up about the time that it quits on me but he said he can only come in the morning. Not sure why you would show up when it is working...

Do you have an energy management box installed by the power company?
Exactly what I was thinking.

If you want to test and see if the t-stat is the problem, change the time of day in the t-stat. See if the problem corresponds to the time the t-stat :"thinks" it is or the real time. You might want to try a different A/C guy too.

No energy management box. I am going to try to switch the times on the thermostat this morning and see if that works. If the guy can't figure it out today, then I may find someone else to check it out. Problem is, we were assigned to him through our home warranty...

What you describe is " The Ghost In The Machine" scenario.

I will say that a programmable stat can cause your problem.

Or the guy programmed it wrong.

When the second guys comes back read the programing instruction just to make sure you are not defaulting back to factory setting.

If it does it a third time your problem is some where else. Question: Do you have a second electric meter that reads the ac current draw only?

Almost has to be the stat. If all else fails, have them put a simple heat/cool non-programmable or mechanical stat on.

If that doesn't work, move, because there is something else living in your house besides you that gets chilly during the afternoon.

btw....sorry to hear you have a home warranty. With HVAC, those are rarely a good idea. Just think about that at renewal time.
