I have been redoing my workshop. I put Durock over 5/8th drywall to surround my wood stove, and was thinking of some type of finishing treatment.

A couple of questions.
1) I could do subway tile if I choose that route what type of adhesive/grout would I choose for the tile to deal with the heat from the fireplace?

2) can I use Mortar as texture to match my wall texture if I choose not to do tile?

Just looking at my options for how to finish this little section of my shop.

Tile set with powdered 'modified thinset' and standard cement based grout would be simple and inexpensive---and would be my choice--

Your idea of stuccoing the cement backer would also work well (faster, cheaper but less fancy looking)

I have a wood stove---and I over heat it occasionally --place a sheet metal heat shield between the stove and the wall---it helps heat the room and keeps the wall from getting to hot.

I hate to admit this--but my 'heat shield' is the steel cover from an ancient computer case.---I was just going to 'try it out' before making something permanent. (it has been like that for years.)

Ayuh,..... Ditto,.... Heat shields are the way I've gone,...

Personally, I think Kitdog way over did it with the 5/8" rock, 'n cement board,....
No offense, just My opinion,...

Got a friend with a woodstove in a corner, walls are matched pine t&g,.....
I made 'er a couple of movable panels to protect the wood,...
Galvanized sheet metal, 4' tall, 'bout 3' wide, mounted to unistrut legs, 2 each panel,...
The tin panel is 'bout 8 or 10" off the floor, the unistrut feet hold it 'bout 4" off the wall,...
She gets a nice convection effect, pullin' air up both sides of the tin panels,...

The woodstove at camp is under 2' from a 3/8" rocked wall,....
I took 2 antique corner arrow turn signs( the 2' x 2' yellow ones tellin' ya to slow down for a curve on a dark country road) I'd dug outa a dumpster, 'n bolted 'em to a couple ole fence posts, probably outa the same dumpster,...
It leans against the wall, 'n takes All the heat, the wall stays cool to the touch,...

Any ole piece a tin, or several of 'em, will do the job,....

Cool thanks, I was kind of just looking for something to pretty up the corner. I like the idea of heat sheilds, here in NM we don't get much of a winter and I could use them to hang papers and such with magnets during the warmer parts of the year!

I actualy have the whole shop done in 5/8" sheetrock, so that is just what happen to be what I put the Durock over. lol but a little overkill never hurt anyone. :glasses::biggrin2:

I just redid an indoor fireplace by tearing off the 70's faux-stone, attached durock, put some diamond metal lath over that, then used tinted cement as the top-coat. Came out looking pretty cool, actually. I like the industrial look, though...may not be your cup of tea.
