Hello,

I am redoing my fireplace (ave zero clearance fireplace insert). I removed the tile and built a frame around my fireplace. I am installing fake stone (concrete fake design).

I installed 1/2" Duroc cement board onto 2x4 frame using plastic cap nails.

Will this cause me issues down the road with corrosion. They are plastic washers with eletrogalvanized nails.

It is holding no problem and it is a small job, 5 feet wide by 8 feet tall. But I have since read that you need hot dipped galvanized. This is rustic fake stone so the need to be completely smooth is not an issue. My concern is, why this fall apart five or ten years form now from the mortar corroding the nails.

Thank you.

They make screws for that stuff, I would just add screws like the nails weren't there.

When you frame in a fireplace they have a required space for no wood above it. They come with metal triangles that are in your way just for that purpose??

Thank you. Looks like I am going back to Lowe's. Got these because I'm doing it myself and thought they may be easier to hang it but oh,well. It will definitely not be coming down after I add screws.

I saw the triangles on top when I removed the tile. They used adhesive on the tile and glued it to the fireplace and the drywall. Drywall was destroyed ripping out the tile so I cut it back to the house frame which was about six inches from the fireplace. It is zero clearance fireplace so it says you can have combustible material right up to it and I am six inches further away they the drywall. I had a local fabricator make a metal surround to close the gap.

Not sure I'd leave the plastic caps as they may hinder tile installation. You need it flat.
