IF the Ceiling is pop corn, then a sprayer would be my first choice. But if the ceiling is a trowel or sponge texture then a roller would be the go to tool.
And even spraying a poor quality popcorn ceiling, which most are, just buys you a little time. It will fail if it has not already. Best to take it down and be done with it. And if you try to spray one, make sure you rent a sprayer capable of delivering the paint at a fairly low pressure or you will just start spraying the popcorn to pieces and all over the place.
If you have popcorn you will need to use an airless. If you have knockdown or orangepeel, then you can roll it or spray it.
a "ceiling paint" will work just fine.
