so we are demoing and gutting the inside of my house now. when removing all the sheetrock from walls and ceilings. on the top floor where the attic is above the ceiling my wife doesn't like the textured ceiling but we're really not keen on ripping it all down with the insulation above it. someone helping his demo mentioned having someone skim coat the ceiling when they come in there and do all the walls. is that possible? does that make sense and is there any downside to doing that? thanks a lot

If it hasn't been painted, you can spray it with water from a garden pump sprayer and scrape the texture off, then skim what's left... Otherwise, yes, the whole thing could always be skim coated as is. It's often good to prime before skimming to ensure the old texture doesnt let go due to moisture from the additional coats of mud.

Depending on the age and type of texture, it's often wise to have it tested.

That ONLY works with popcorn. She didnt say what kind of texture is currently on it.

To the OP. Popcorn can be scraped off, other textures can be skimcoated over. Popcron scraping will likely need some skimcoating too though.

not popcorn..very minimal texture ..almost like a high nap roller was used..
