Which I interpret to mean that a ceiling fan and light can be powered from an unswitched feed and use pull chains while a wall switch controls a wall receptacle in the room, or the wall switch can be a master switch for the ceiling fan unit with pull chains for the fan and light.

That's how I interpret the exception:

So, I guess the next question is: does OP have a switched receptacle in the room?​
