Have a dimmer I am replacing for a ceiling fan light. The ceiling fan is controlled by a single swtich (on/off). The light is an old leviton dimmer that only has the toggle (bottom off, top on, dim in middle, no slide bar Single black to connected to the yellow wirenut, and red going out to fan light). The dimmer only has black and red, no ground. going to replace with a new lutron dimmer that has the brass and copper for the two wires, but the lutron also has a green ground.

? Does the green matter that much if the fan is grounded via the on/off for the fan motor? or a the motor and the light two completely different entities in the fan housing? Just curious.

The green wire doesn't gnd/bond the ight/fan fixture. It gnds/bonds the
dimmers strap. The strap is the part on which the dimmer is mounted
and the whole unit is attached to the box via the two holes in the strap.
The strap may also include removable heat dissipating wings.

Red went to light, black tied to constant on old. When I put black to copper screw on Lutron and red to brass screw (lutron diagram)I get flickering of the light with the dimmer. The dimmer gets brighter and dimmer, but flickers when all the way on. Not sure what I am missing. did not connect the ground.
