I have an outdoor ceiling fan that I am going to replace to get a fan that has a light kit included with it. The existing set up is a ceiling fan on a switch and multiple canned lights on another switch.

As mentioned, I want to install a ceiling fan with a light kit as well. I want to have one switch control the canned lights as well as the light on the ceiling fan on the same pre existing wall switch and then the ceiling fan on/off on the separate pre existing wall switch.

Can I do this with the current wires that I will find when I take the current ceiling fan off?

Thank you.

no....not likely

you most likely just have a 14/2 wire there from the switch,

you would need a 14/3 wire from the switch(es)

only thing you could do with the existing wiring, is wire it so both the light AND fan come on with the one switch

Since the fan is already wired to operate off one switch, can you extend one 14-2 from one of your cans to the fan box and connect it to the light wiring? Do you have access?

I know that it is not possible gain access from above. It is about 7 ft from one canned light to the fan. You think that it is "typically" possible to fish wire from one to the other?

I miscalculated the area in which the lights were located in my attic from above. I was able to access the fan and the two canned lights. I have attached pics of the fan box and the two canned light boxes.

Pics 1 and 2 show both sides of the fan box. I am assuming that since the box straddles a joist, no need for an actual fan rated box?

Pic 3 shows the one canned light that runs wire between the two canned lights and one wire that runs wire down stream for power.

Pic 4 show the second canned light that receives power from the first canned light.

After looking at the set up the wiring should be pretty cut and dry right? Run a new 14-2 wire off of the pic 4 canned light and run back through the existing fan box and wire the new cables to the new light kit and wire the existing fan wires as they are now to the new fan?

My hopes would be to be able to run the new light kit off of the existing canned light switch and if I decide that I want to turn off the light kit and only run the canned lights, I could pull the fan cord to do so.

Thanks for any comments and observations.

The box in picture one appears to be a saddle box and may very well be fan rated. It will say so in the box plus the screws that hold the fan bracket will drive directly into the joist, so it's good, if that is the case.

Typical fan with light kit wire color codes:

Black wire from new fan unit connects to that switch's black wire in ceiling.

Blue wire from fan is for light. When bringing new wire from canned lights to fan unit, connect to blue. Don't use a dimmer switch. Fan light may not be compatible other than on/off.
