Ok first let me start off by saying I wasn't sure where to put this question.

Anyways here goes...I am installing a ceiling fan and I got down near the end of the project BUT I am installing the blades and 1 screw hole on a single blade (holds 2 screws) just won't budge AT ALL...

So I guess what I am curious about is if anyone has any tricks they know of so that I can either go buy another screw or get it through...the man thing I am looking at is that it seems as though there are no threads inside the hole at all...someone help

Also let me preface by saying I don't have a tap kit and for a fan that was less than $100 cost, I don't think it makes sense to pay at least $50 for a kit

Was the hole tapped at all? If so you could probably clean it up with a couple sacrificial screws. In a pinch i made a self tapping screw with a dremel cut-off tool by removing what looks like a 1/4 pie when viewing the screw on end.
Some self tapping screws (and taps for that matter) have a similar design.
I think this answers your question, but my main suggestion is that you take the two components to the store you bought it at and get new pieces. They will ask that you take the whole fan in, just tell them no, you will win.

Take one of the screws to the store and just buy the size tap you need. I have had that before where one hole was not tapped and usually just a 10-32 thread. Or just take the fixture back to the store and get another one.

I'd rather not take the entire fixture or the problem area as it is where the fan blades screw to the big housing portion...

From the looks and feel it looks like they completely missed "threading day" on that particular hole...so yeah I probably would need a tap...never done it before though so what should I look for?
The screw is one of those blade iron armature screws and doesn't give me the size in the parts guide...

But yeah it really stinks bc it's the only hole of 10 that wasn't done correctly.


So just take the screw in and see if someone in the store could help me?

take the screw with you to a hardware store and purchase a single tap in that size. you don't have to buy a whole set.

Just take the screw with you and pick up nuts until you find the right one.
Chances are it will be metric.

Ok, i thought the hole was on the blade bracket. Its on the main fan unit.
3 options:1. take the unit in for an exchange. 2. Buy a tap for about $5(dont need a whole set)
3. Buy/make a self tapping screw of the correct thread form and hope thats enough to chase the threads.

The screw is the blade iron armature and they are placed through a front bracket of that middle piece in the blade assembly and placed through the 6th piece down on the hanger assembly at the top of it.....that is where the screw holes are and I am having the issue....


Does that make sense?


I was just curious what the best options would be and I just had no idea what type/size of screw it was and what would be my best option....


Just a bit more than frustrating when you think you're close to completion of putting something together only to get stopped in your tracks.

Call the 800 number on the install sheet. Hunter is a good company. Explain to them what happened and I bet in a couple days you will have a new part.

Take it back! I know its harder to do, but I would take it back no matter what.
Then, when I got to the store I would be looking for a better quality fan. ( I have always liked Hunter) Insist on a discount for your troubles.
If you bought this fan from where I think you did, they will have no problem with reimbursing you for your troubles. Just ask and be firm.

Ps...........Make them check the replacement before you leave the store. Especially if you get the exact model you have now. Could be many fans with this same issue.

Just get a few tapered self tapping metal screws and try them until you get the right size to catch, then ream it in. A hex head will work best. It can be painted black later if you need.

If you want to take it back to a big store like Lowes or Home Depot, you don't necessarily need to take down the whole fan. You could just remove the part that is the problem, take it back, have them open a new box, give you the replacement part from the new box, put your bad part in the box and have them return that one. Same result, you just swapped it out. They've done that for me before.

The problem is, the way the fan is assembled it is pretty much the whole fan as this is the top part of 3 pieces put together and it's just below the canopy...so it would be a HUGE pain...


Maybe ill see if I can get someone to figure out what I need to thread the screw into the blade assembly hole

Why is this thread still alive? Either fix it or take it back, pick one, eithrr will be fine. Yes it seems like both options suck, but neither is that bad, and Hunter is a good company in my experience, so this isnt likely to happen again.

Your question has been answered multiple times.

(1) Take the screw with you to hardware store and get a tap for that size.

(2) Take the whole thing down and return it for a new one.

Complaining that it's too hard does not fix the problem. Do something.

If I was installing this and had the problem, I would tap the hole.

Realistically, the hole is tapped but the powder coating is probably just covering it up. This happens a lot.

To the guys telling me to take it back thx...


I asked a few questions while I was out and was told there would be too much a hassle trying to find something to tap the screw hole and when I talked to the lighting mgr where I got it, he offered to knock $25 off the fan for my troubles, which about pays for the gas driving back and forth from there twice BUT was still nice of them to do...

Fan is now up and not only is there a fresh globe that is not cracked BUT all the screw holes were properly threaded this time.
