My ceiling fan does NOT have a dimmer switch or a remote control, however, the light bulbs seem to switch off and back on again at times. Any ideas what might be going on?

Ayuh,... There's a Loose connection in it somewhere,... Which is a Fire hazard...

Loose wire? At the very top of the fan where it mounts to the ceiling there should be a red or blue wire that's connected to the incoming black wire that powers the light.
It could also be the switch that the cord to power the light on and off is attachted to is going bad.

i agree, check your connections. Oh yeah, and turn off the breaker before you touch that wire...

What size bulbs are you using?
Fans have a current limiter to keep the size of the bulbs below 60 watts each.
