Cedar deck with pressure treated framing?

902 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  jay78
Hola from Oklahoma!

Building a deck, at this point I am still in the permit/planning phase. I plan to have a section of the deck covered with PBR galvalume panels. The cover will be held up with 4 6x6s.

Under the deck will be framed with pressure treated lumber, the deck itself will be 5/4 cedar.

I would love to frame out the covered part using cedar since it will be exposed but it will greatly increase the cost. If everything but the decking is PT lumber will the PT roof framing clash with the decking? Any stains I can use on PT to make it look similar to cedar?

I used a Behr semi-transparent stain before to get a close match for a mahogany deck. It won't match exactly, but will be better than bare PT. Home Depot has a nice display that you can get an idea of what stain looks like on different woods. Take a look, it may work for you.

You aren't going to leave the cedar decking untreated, so if you put a transparent stain on the cedar and a matching semi-transparent stain on the PT frame, they should end up looking pretty close.
