I'm currently repairing split, weathered, siding on my 100 year old 2 story home. Also have one area where I've moved & resized a window that requires some siding. The original siding is 6" beveled cedar clapboards. The last time I bought some it was over $2/foot. Now it seems to be difficult to find at any price.

Is there a suitable substitute in the engineered siding products that will last and match the existing siding? What's my best option? Bite the bullet and order a full bundle of cedar?

No there is not.

As mentioned going to a traditional (real) local lumber yard is your best source.

If you're in the midwest then 'Menards' (a big box store) should stock what you're looking for where Lowes and HD will not.

Yes, I am limited locally. Small midwest town of 9,000, we do have two lumber yards. One says "no way" and the other is where I have bought in the past.

I have to travel 100 miles to find a city with a "real" lumber yard. It may come down to that.

The other challenge is trying to haul 16' lengths of siding in a regular pickup without a pipe rack. Easy in town, but pretty sketchy on the highway.

Remember the old ad "let your fingers do the walking"?

In the modern world, you let the internet do the work.

You should find a distributor that will deliver if you buy enough.

And I don't mean the whole bundle, just what you need, plus a few extra, just in case some of the delivery gets damaged, or is junk in the first place.

There is a product out there called "All Prime" which is actually made from a tree from Asia called paulownia. Cheaper than cedar and better I think, at least compared to the cedar you can get these days. It's finger jointed and primed on both sides. I've used it and have been impressed with it's stability, workabiltiy, etc. It's also rot resistant. Sold in a variety of forms, including bevel lap siding.

Never seen it in a box store. Better lumber yards will either stock it or can order it.

You did not post your location in your profile so hard for anyone to make suggestion on where to find anything.

One possibility is make your own from cedar deck boards, if you have the tools.

If some of the bad boards are along the ground, you may wish to consider carving them out of PVC trim board (expensive, but will never rot).

I have done both of the above for a family member's garage, when I could not find that profile.

I'm in York, NE, actually not too far from kwikfishron. I have the local small town lumberyards, box stores in Lincoln, NE. For a real large scale commercial lumberyard, Omaha is 100 miles away.

The siding is in bad shape where it is close to the roof. One picture shows the back side of the garage, the other shows the original window opening. The new window will be a transom style, centered between the garage and downspout. There is also a dormer on the front of the house that needs repair where the siding and roof come together.

The original window has been demo'd, the OSB is a temporary patch to close up the house.
