Hi everyone,

I'm a new homeowner and new to DIY. I just bought a house and replaced the carpets in the main part of the house with hardwoods (that's another post!), but it's just not in the budget to replace the carpet in the bedrooms yet. In one of the bedrooms, it's pretty clear that the previous owners' pets had accidents in one room. The smell can be pretty terrible if I keep the door closed, but it's not exactly pleasant if I leave it open.

I've tried the stuff from Lowe's that says it's supposed to remove pet odors, but just the spray on or sprinkle on and then vacuum stuff. I know that I probably need to thoroughly steam clean the carpets, so any advice on which cleansers will be most likely to get the pee smell out of the carpet?

The urine usually soaks thru the carpet into the pad and into the wood underneath. Many times you have to take up the carpet and pad and paint the floor with Kilz to get rid of the odor.

Just Bill is right... Natures Miracle will not cure the problems, but do an excellent stop gap job in the meantime, until you can afford to replace.

One bedroom in NC? Make a few calls and you might find that you can get a pretty inexpensive remnant/carpet replacement and the pad and not have to worry about it again. After the chems and/or steam cleaning, you wont be saving much more than putting in new low-end carpet, unless this is a room that you see getting alot of use in the future, then a higher grade pad and carpet may be better put off till later.

To clean the cat urinal carpets

Hi,

Urine can saturate absorbent materials such as carpet and padding.By using following methods you can find the solution of your problem.

Blot up as much of the urine as possible with a soft, clean white cloth or absorbent paper towel.

Press down firmly for 30 seconds. The more fresh urine you can remove before it dries, the simpler it will be to remove the odor. Remove the towel and repeat the process until the area is fully dried.

1. Baking soda works well to eliminate surface (but not deeply penetrated) odors. Dampen the area with clean water and then spread baking soda over it and let it dry. Brush or vacuum to remove the dry material.

2. Another option is the solution of warm water and white vinegar.Place dry towels over the stained area and put something heavy over the towels to increase the pressure.

3. To clean old or heavy stains in carpets,you can use extracting/wet-vac machines, it work like a vacuum cleaner and do the best job of forcing clean water through your carpet.

4. Add several drops of Listerine mouthwash to the water/peroxide mixture it helps a lot to remove the odor.

This would be the answer, none of the above responses will help if it is soaked into the wood.I will say that Zinnsers Bin would be a better product to use. Kilz original will work but Bin will work better.:yes:
