I want to relocate a telephone that uses POTS. The current location will be behind the fridge after the remodel and I want to make up a splice in the wall, put on a cover, pull wire up wall and across the ceiling. This is a low slope roof with no attic, but the ceiling will be open for drywall work.

1) Will it work?

2)If so, what sort of splice/connector to use?

3)I have plenty of cat 5 and 6 cable, can I use this instead of buying POTS?

It will work, just keep track of what colors you use. In the low voltage section in the electrical department at Home Depot or Lowes, you will find the right connectors. I like the ones made by 3M, but Ideal and others make them as well. Here's a pic:

Yep, cat5 or 6 will work. Actually, anything which conducts will work. The only thing you need to do is make sure the colour on the splice side is the same on the jack side. I connect the white/blue (cat5) to the green (POTS) TIP and the blue /white to the red RING. HD sells connectors for this (B-Connectors) or if you happen to see a phone guy, ask him..I'm sure he wouldn't begrudge you a couple of them. Basically, these connectors have a metal rasp-like opening, You put the two wires inside (no need to strip the wires) and squeeze it with pliers.

just being crazy here but have you condsidered simply running a new line from the NID to where ever you want the jack? If possible, I would not use the old telco wiring and change everything to cat 6, or even 7 if you feel spendy.

the reasoning is; if you want DSL, the cat 6 would be less susceptible to problems of any sort.

nap, I wish I could, but it will be a hassle. With no attic to work in I would have to run it around the outside of the house and it wouldn't look so nice. Just trying to do the best I can with the areas that are open currently.
