Casing around door that is uneven...........

So I am replacing the trim in our living room.

The one door, the jamb sticks out beyond the drywall. Normally, I would just plane it down to make it flush with the drywall but if I do it in this case, then the door itself, when closed will obviously stick out beyond the jamb unless I move the hinges and stop.

So is that the preferred method or can I attempt to build up some drywall compound around the door where the jamb sticks out behind the drywall and feather it to make it look unnoticeable?

Any other suggestions?
