I have a Carrier 48TJE004 unit on an outdoor slab that heats and cools my shop. Not sure how old the unit is but it looks in pretty good shape. I started noticing odd noises and smelled gas so called someone to look at it. The heat exchanger was rusted pretty bad at the entry point. Told it was shot. Replacement part and labor would run $1600. New unit all together would be $4200. My shop is 30x40 and we really only use the unit in summer and winter. Winter I keep it around 55 degrees and summer around 78-80 as there is plumbing inside and dog pen inside. Since we don't use it much, thinking of doing replacement part vs new unit but asking for help. Is $1600 legit? Getting a second quote.

Sounds fair to me. My company charges $600 for labor to replace a furnace heat exchanger and the exchanger costs the extra. Sounds reasonable to me.
