Hello, I plan on attaching a Carport to the side of my house using hangers for the rafters screwed to the facia. The carport is 21 feet in length and 11 feet wide and due to the current house roof drip edge it only leaves me approx 4 1/2 inch to attach the hangers, so if I'm using 2x6's the hangers will hang approx 1 1/4 lower than the facia board so might look weird. So my question is, should I replace the facia board with 1x6 board and let the board hang down a bit from the soffit but the 2x6 hangers will look flush or can I use 2x4 lumber for the rafters at 12" ctrs and just sister every other? I'm keep the slop standard at 1/4 inch per foot, so roughly 3 inch slope over the entire width.
Thank you

so that fascia is nailed into the end grain of the 16 rafters with 2 nails each. So you expect 32 nails into end grain is going to hold up 1/2 the weight of the roof and snow loads and what ever wind loads. Good luck with that.

Thanks for responding, we do get a lot of snow at times but for the roof I was thinking either Plywood and Shingles or just Clear/White Corrugated PVC to allow light to still shine in since we do have a Window on that side of the house as well.

Tell us about the roof on the house. including pitch and maybe a picture.

So should I remove the Facia and re-install it with 3 inch screws into the existing rafters instead?

My carport is basically free standing on its own posts, but its roof connects to the house.

The old version had the house's eave extended to meet the almost flat carport roof. That area rotted out prematurely.

When I re-did the house roof, I jacked up the car-port, and extended the rafters to reach onto the house's wall.. like Nealtw suggests. Its only about a 6' span between the first posts and the house wall (porch/breezeway) and the car parks in the 9' wide spot beside it.

I cut and fit soffit vent strips into each rafter bay to keep out the critters.

Okay, thanks for the advise, sounds like a solid plan :)
Can you attach a picture of it so I can get a visual of the final outcome? Thx
@Nealtw - What tails are getting cut off? Where my current roof is shingled onto?
The house rafters stick out about 18" to the gutter. you just cut them off flush with the outside of the wall.

Where on you house are you going to start. Right at the corner or?

I cut the tails back somewhat. Its the width of my skilsaw oddly enough. :wink2:

On the left you can see where I kept the extended eave area.

I'm not a carpenter by any means... only trying to make my place better than it was.
