I know what's needed to make joints for copp/alum but do I need aluminum marrets for just capping unused aluminum wires? I have a box that used to have a plug. There is one 12/2 aluminum Romex in it and I just want to cap off the wires and stick a cover on the box

I ended up using the purple marrets with compound in them just to be safe. These purple Maretts say they are to be used for joining copper to aluminum. If I wanted to join aluminum to aluminum under A Marette, what type of Maret should I use?

There is no reason you would want to join AL to AL in the small gauge wires you are talking about.

Sorry for my ignorance but why is there no reason to do so?
Lets say I have an outlet that is solely to be used as a junction box?
So 2 #12/2 romex aluminum. Is there a type of marret that is used for alum to alum?
I should mention that I am asking because I am going through my home which is mainly aluminum and the previous owner or electrician used regular blue ideal marrets with antiox compound where aluminum and aluminum wires were joined together. I would like to correct this if its done incorrect.

In this video at time 1:16 the host mentions that these marrets cannot be used for alum to alum connections

My point was that you should not be extending aluminum wires so you would have no reason to splice them. You are talking about replacing an existing connection. I guess you could pigtail each AL wire with copper using a purple then connect the copper pig tail with a regular wire but. But since you are in Canada wire nuts count as box fill and you will probably exceed fill. Personally I think you out to leave it be. Make sure the wire nuts are tight.
They make Polaris connectors that are rated for AL to CU connections but you see the price you will fold your tent.

Yes thats exactly it, I want to replace all the marrets in the home with the correct marrets. The reason for even starting all this work was because I noticed an old marret that was fixed on some aluminum wires looked brittle. As soon as I touched it it fell apart.
