How do i do it?

it seems to be at an end of a circuit. i've done some googling but have read some contradictory advise about whether i can just cut the cord and cap the end (live wire, but capped), or i need to do something else (not sure what i can do...).

here's a pic.

any advice?

No you can not cap linpfe wire and abandon it. You must disconnect wires at both ends. That zip cord going into that box is a violation.

Is the wire from the top of the box the one going to the light fixture? Does anything else go along with the wire?

Just turn of the breaker to the receptacle, remove the wire from the box and turn the breaker back on.

Second picture shows a second box with a switch in it. And it looks like there is another outlet or something else in the same box as the switch. So I think it's a little more complicated than simply the wire from the top of the box going to the fixture. I think OP has to take more time to understand this circuit.

I'm just going off what the op posted here

To me it looks like it goes into the box with the switch, and zip cord goes to the light.

The title says capping a light fixture but the pics show two device boxes (there looks like a fluorescent fixture in the second pic but unknown how it fits in).
- If you can confirm the box in the first pic feeds the box in the second pic (likely the cable exiting the top but not certain) and only that box,
- If the white 'zipcord' feeds the lamp, and you don't want the lamp, switch or outlet (it looks like a combo) for anything else,
- Then the feed from the first box can be removed. How you do this - with the circuit powered off of course - depends on how the wires are connected at the box in the first pic.

Ah yeah, I see it. That gray bit of wire at the top of the first picture is the same as the one in the bottom of the second picture. The OP's label "to fixture" is misleading. You're right. The zipcord goes to the light. That makes sense. I'd probably just take the cord off and leave the switch disconnected. As long as it's in a box, that should be fine, right?

I would think so. Then he still has a single outlet near the ceiling and a non-functional switch.

Also forgot to mention that it sort of looks another wire alongside the 'black' romex wire at the switch box. I might be mistaken, the pic's a little fuzzy.
