Hi, love the forum. I'm a long time reader and first time poster.

A section of my vent stack for my kitchen sink has deteriorated to the point that a section has crumbled away. I was thinking of installing an automatic air vent rather than replacing the entire stack. Then capping off the old stack to keep water and debris from going into my basement.

Does this sound reasonable? What can I use to cap off the vent stack with? The only products I see don't completely seal it off, which is what I would want.

"Where are you thinking of putting your AAV?"

On the vent stack about a foot above the joint where the sink waste connects to the vent stack. That is where the breakage occurred.

"Are AAVs legal where you live? They are not in many places"

I don't know if they are or not. All I know is they are available for purchase at my local Lowe's store. I guess I'll have to find out.
