About 30 years ago (I can't believe it's been that long . . . ) we added an addition to our small home - a large family room with a master bedroom above. Facing the backyard from the second story, our contractor added a cantilevered deck and I had no complaints with his craftsmanship or technique, even though I have limited knowledge of residential construction.
My wife and I spent about 10 years overseas and when we returned, I found what appeared to be some termite damage. I pulled up the 2x6 redwood decking and found (what I consider) to be significant dry rot and termite damage. Some of the joists are a fraction of their original size.
While the deck feels as sturdy as it ever has, I feel like I need to do something. Is there anyway to inject penetrating epoxy and rehabilitate the joists? Or should we just cut the joists flush with the side of the house and lock the sliding glass door that serviced the deck?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
