I want to cantalever a porch overhang outside my sliding glass doors any sugestions...

I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice, but the first thing that comes to mind is your joists should return back into the house twice as far as the outside overhang, if I recall correctly. That will limit the size of your porch.....

How big is the overhang?
An outside porch?
An enclosed porch?
1st floor, 2nd floor?
Whats under the slider? Basement, crawl space, solid cement wall?

The 2 to 1 is not accurate
It all depends upon the load

Probably should have qualified that 2 to 1 with, "at least". (Just getting the ball rolling.)
