Any recommendations on can light spacing (probably 6" CFL) For a basement ceiling? One section is 30'x10', and then under the soffit which runs parallel 30'x4'. I was thinking 2 across the 10' section, and one under the soffit at 6', 12', 18', and 24', so 12 altogether. Or I could go 8', 16' 24', so 9 total. Idk if that would be enough...

Depends on the mounting height, use of the room, type of trim and bulb.

It depends on the cans, the reflectance of floor, wall, and ceiling, and how much light you want. Vendor web sites often provide calculators, so that you can estimate the amount of light on horizontal surface below the fixtures, and you might go there, but you have to figure out how much light you want. Sometimes electrical suppliers have a sales consultant on staff who can take your needs, estimate the levels you want, and do the calculations; that might be a good bet.
