My Maytag Centennial washer was making a hideous noise sometimes while agitating, especially during the rinse cycle. It also had a weird plastic sawdust smell. I troubleshot the problem and the pulley wheel was rubbing on the cover. In addition, evidently a cork got stuck in there and it was chewed up, lots of cork dust under the machine, which explains the sawdust smell. The various sites addressing the problem said to tighten the nut which should raise the pulley up so it doesn't rub on the cover. But.. and there is always a but.. the nut seems fine and will not move, and when I place the cover on, not even attached with the screws, the pulley still touches it. I ran a small load without the cover, no noise. Can I keep running it without the cover?

Sure, as long as you are sure that nothing will ever get tangled in the moving belt and pulley.

Cat could get behind it and get tangled, Those lost socks are going somewhere, mice might set up shop in there.

And make sure that you clean the accumulated dust bunnies often.

Thanks! I do have cats, hadn't thought of that as they don't normally go back there, but cats are fickle creatures, so I'll rig up some kind of wire mesh cover for the back. And it looks like checking for socks, etc will become part of my prewash routine.
