Can I put a GFI outlet inside a gas water heater closet?

Recently had a water heater leak and mitigation took out some drywall around the WH and Washer & Dryer. The WH closet is 33" x 49". I'd like to place a GFI outlet on the far inside wall near the doorway to power my Wi-FI sprinkler unit (24 volt). When placed, the GFI would be approximately 32" from the WH casing. Is this alright?

Thanks

All your receptacles in the basement should be GFCI protected, either from a GFCI breaker or a GFCI receptacle in the first location and the remainder taken from the LOAD side of the receptacle.
