I'm in the finishing stages of building a window seat and somehow managed to make a bad cut on the top piece. As you can see in the photo, there is a large gap on the left hand side between the wall and the top of the window seat. There's also a similar gap against the back wall but it's tough to see. The gap is about a 1/4 inch at its widest point which is think would be too big to caulk. What do you think?

This top piece will open for storage underneath and my original plan was to cut the opening lid out of this piece (leaving about 3 or 4 inches around the edges that would not be part of the 'door').

Am I better of just cutting those three inch pieces individually and fitting a door in between?

Thanks

You can't really caulk a gap that big, well, you can, but getting it to look good and last, well, that's another story. I've done it and gotten away with it, but, more often than not, it shrinks and cracks after a period of time. Better to just trim it out and be done with it.

A backer rod would fill that, I would use paint-able silicone instead of caulk though, will last much longer

Although since you are cutting a section of the center to be lifted, I dont think a quarter round would look bad at all

do you have any more of the molding left? just cut off a little piece and caulk the sides. Use a pointed object to push the caulking where you want it to go then wipe it down. Should be alright in a pinch like this.
