I have a sand ceiling that I did a joint compound patch job along the edge of the soffit. Before I paint the entire ceiling with ceiling paint, can I add some sand to a small amount of ceiling paint for the areas of ceiling that are smooth from the joint compound. I really don't want to spend money for a gallon of sand white paint for only a few unfortunately noticeable spots.

You could try it but I would be willing to bet a few bucks you end up having to paint the whole ceiling to get a good look.

Paint stores sell [or used to] sell a sand texture additive you can add to paint. If I remember correctly it comes in fine, medium and coarse.
