Hi, I just found this thing in my basement, anyone tell tell me what is it and what it is for? I know it is not sump pump, because I do have a sump pump near at the other end of this room...

Also, I wonder should I pump the water out of the pit? any suggestion is appreciated...

thanks Dave, another question is, the water level in my area is quite high, especially in Spring time. I wonder what is the proper way to keep this pit dry? as you can see, it's filled with water now ...

Is that just a gravel bottom?
Seems like that must be a sewer line from the size of it
So opening the cap to drain is out
Does it ever overflow, get a higher water level?
How long have you been in the house?

My sump gets water when it rains heavy & the stream is higher
We've had quite a bit of rain recently & it is fairly dry
I've been working on re-routing drain pipes
And changing the landscaping to drain away from the house

That may possibly help

Yes, it is just a gravel bottom, never saw this kind of thing before.

I've only been this house for a month, to me, I didn't see it has been overflown before, didn't see any sign of flood on the floor, the floor is very dry. But as you can see, there is about 4 - 6 inches of water in there and I just have no clue where this water come from ...

appreciate your help ...
