Hello, I'm new to this forum but I've been searching all over for answers to my questions about Cabot Weathering Stain. We bought a 1999 colonial with Cedar Shake shingles about 4 years ago. The outside of the house needs to be updated but I'm not sure what my options are since it was originally stained with Cabot Weathering Stain in Silver Gray.

It's not that I don't like this look, I just want something a little different. I was thinking about going darker gray but not sure you can use a different product. I see from the can that it's oil based. Do i now have to stick to oil based? I don't even see this product on their website anymore.

As I'm sure you can tell, I'm very new to all this. We will hire a painter to do the job but I want to be as educated as possible before I make any decisions. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Generally the easiest way to maintain stains like the Cabot semi transparent oil, is to clean the surface well and use the same product or a similar oil stain.

If you want to stick with the semi-transparent look, I would stick with an oil if you can get it in your area. You could just get a darker color of the same type stain.
If you wanted to go a solid color, you could use most any solid stain, oil or acrylic.
