I am ready to put up the Duroc in the shower. I plan on installing a simple shower niche (soap/shampoo holder) opposite side of the shower head/spigot. What do I do? Do I frame in what is to be the niche? Does it matter what size it is? Do I cut and screw in the Durock all around?

I just got through with an insert, you can make it any size you want to. Yes you have to install durock back, sides, top and bottom, then seal with redgard or something equivalent. The bottom of the inset needs to be slanting downward so water will run out instead of standing. You will want to install the tape on all the seams also.

Just keep in mind when framing your opening is going to shrink thickness of tile thin set and cement board on all sides
