Not asking for specific costs, but I was wondering if it is less expensive to add square footage by going up, or out? I have a little 2 bedroom 1 bath 960 square foot home. I have about 1/3 of an acre, so i have the room to expand, but the funds are a bit tight, so I need to go as inexpensive as possible.

I recently looked at this for a coming addition to my house - the cost came out to be about a wash, the complexity of going up was higher. Going up reuses existing foundation - so save costs there. But requires removal of roof and replacement. Lots of variable here - suitability of first floor for supporting a second, etc. Others with more experience will likely chime in. Disruption if trying to live in the house during the work is a factor. Another factor is that of whether you want a multiple story house - age of occupants, etc. are factors. We opted to go out rather than up.
