I am looking to build a natural stone fire pit area. Looking to use like a rounded tumbled rocks and decomposed granite for the surround. I was thinking about dry stacking it. I was wondering if using fire brick and morter joints would be a better option and look better.

I am also interested in this type of fire pit. The soil in my area is very rocky. With the recent excavation I've done I have piles and piles of rocks all around. When the snow melts I'd like to build a fire pit from the native rock.

if exploding rocks are a possible issue, I would line the
inside of the pit with firebrick just for cheap insurance
and peace of mind. (and yes, some rocks will explode
when overheated too quickly).
