I'm building a pergola, I want to span it with 2x12's and the distance is 18' we would like to span alittle further than 18'
how far can a 2x12 span and just hold its own weight without sagging, im not talking deflecting a little, but its the first thing you see when you drive down the drive way sag.
im thinking of using treated 2x12s

thebiggest trouble with a pergola is the fine line between sag and warp.....you should be sure to build in the least amount of sun possible..until you are able to aplly UV protectant....as far as the span treated 2 x 12 over 16 ft...may be hard to come by....it is inevitable that you will have to repalce some of the boards after you erect it......i usually try to find the old treated materail you know the "green stuff" an hand pick the wetest lumber i can .....these will stay straight the longest......you can hand pick through the pre dryed stuff but the working time is shorter.....

just some thoughts that i hope will help you with your project...
