Today I tried replacing fixtures on bathtub. I purchased a universal spout and the guy at the store told me turn the old one to get it off. Well turning it actually broke it. Now all I have is a piece of cooper bareley sticking out of the wall. How do I fix and replace this?

Copper? Usually it is a galvanized nipple. Can you post a picture so we can see what you have?

Tub spouts can be secured in a number of ways. They can be screwed on to a fitting on the end of the pipe, there can be set screws at the front or rear underside of the spout. They can simply slide on with tight o-ring seals, etc., etc. As suggested, a pic can help us figure what you have and how to fix it. It does sound like you had the one with set screws. But now the copper pipe has to be repaired. It is either soldered into a fitting behind the wall or screws into that fitting. Is there access to the plumbing behind the tub??

I will upload a pic.. but the pipe is cooper, the house was built in 1982. There is no access to wall behind tub unless I cut hole in wall.

That is what you may have to do.

Hi,

All you need to do is just extend the "copper"

YES PEOPLE:

Copper used to be king before all the pex, gal etc.

Anyhow:

Go get a 1/2 copper coupling and some solder and a torch.

Then just sweat on a coupling and a new peice of copper.

Most tub spouts require a 5" nipple regardless if it's pex. copper, gal.

After you sweat on the extension, measure from the inside of the tub spout to the edge that touches the wall and then cut your pipe the same size and then tighten the Allen key.
