Broken Cartridge Stem

Hi all.....a customer of mine broke the stem off of her cartridge. It's a Moen single handle shower cartridge. Any ideas on how to get that sucker out so we can replace the cartridge?

Moen provides a little plastic stem tool in the package with the new stem. After the retainer clip is pulled out, the tool slips in on either side of the old stem; then you twist it out with a wrench or pliers.
