I have a small a/c winch that has worked fine for a year, but now trips the breaker as soon as its plugged in. The winch does not have to be operated to trip the breaker.

If I try to reset the breaker, it automatically goes back to the tripped position.

Ideas?

Sounds like a short to ground in the winch. Possibly a damaged cord?

That is about all I knew to do is inspect the cord...it will check it again a little closer, but it looked ok.

Does the breaker have a TEST button?

It does not...


I did move the winch to a different circuit and it threw it also as soon as it was plugged in.

If not damaged cord then winch has problem and needs to be serviced.
