They also pop out easier, if you lubricate them.
Take a small dull something, like a rounded small Phillips screwdriver tip. Not sharp, no need to ruin cover. Then, using it as guide, work it in circumferential. Make sure slot for lip is clean of debris.

Can't you just take the caliper off, put the covers on while you have it out in the open, and then put the caliper back on?
