Hey All,

Our house was recently added on to with new wiring etc etc. The area in question also has full brick siding on framing. When the electrician wired it for exterior lights he just took the Romex and stuck it right through the sheathing (no inside box). The mason just stuck a length of PVC conduit over it and mortared right around it. So now I'm left trying to figure out how to deal with attaching an actual light here. Can I take a pancake box and tapcon it to the brick then stick a crossbar on it? the roof overhangs quite a bit but I figure best to weatherseal it somehow too. What's typical and to code in this situation?

Thx!

Your electrician should come back and make it right. They should have left materials and coordinated the work with the mason.

Well a lot of things should have been with these people, but here we are :p

What is the ideal? box inside the wall or a mortared in box? The inspector has seen it on several occassions now and never batted an eye so I'm hoping it's not a code violation in and of itself (assuming we finish it somehow)

Post a picture we can not see what your seeing.
Metal box should have been installed to the sheathing and the brick installed around it.
No way do you want to deal with a flush mounded box over the brick.

Figured that was coming :p. A couple of reasons why. The rest of the house uses a brand of brick that is pretty common to the area but no longer made, and a bear to match. I had some left over from various projects and even found some used stuff but in the end we ran tight on em and needed to make up room where we could. The other reason is that the original brickwork is old and not to mention a little sloppy to begin with and this matches it well... it truly looks like it was built at the same time. Tight lines and new brick would have looked completely out of place :)
